MONDAY MEMORIES

LEARNING HOW TO
RIDE MY BIKE
1950

It is Sunday afternoon, and I am sitting here trying to think of a good MONDAY MEMORY. I just got off of the phone with my mother in Arizona. I know that I need to get a Monday Memory written becauseSunday afternoon is the BEST time to do it.... plus this is the One post that I like to do the best!!

Lately I have been busy and have not been able to contribute like I want too. After talking to Mother I got my scrapbook out and began looking at snapshots to "jog" my memory!! I came across this picture and then had a time taking a photo of it plus without decent software trying to crop it!! Thanks to the wonders of a computer I figured it all out!!

This as you can probably tell is myself at the BIG age of 5 and my mother (how old would that make you Mother?) trying to teach me how to ride my blue bicycle. Yeap the photo is in black and white but my bike was BLUE!! I remember that much even at 5!! Some memories just seem to stick in your brain even when it is getting old like mine!! (just those little really important ones seems to stick..like the color BLUE)

I wanted SO BAD to learn to ride!! We lived in the MIDDLE of the country and I mean the middle!! Our closest neighbors were a lonnnnnggg way away!! Cars very seldom came down our oiled roads.

Mother got on her bike which seemed really large to me at the time. She would ride beside me and hold onto the seat of my bike. I would just pedal and pedal for all I was worth thinking that I was doing a great job. I knew that she was holding onto my seat.

One time, however, when I thought she was still holding on I found myself alone. Looking back I saw that she was well behind me and I was all alone. No training wheels for me...just going it alone way high up in the air on that BIG two wheeled bicycle of mine!! Mother had LET GO!! I was riding all by myself!!

That was the best feeling!! I was ON MY OWN!! At least you would have thought that I was!! You know when you are 5 and can now ride your own BIG BIKE.... you are IT!! I do remember that day really well!! I have always loved riding a bike. Unfortunately I cannot ride one any longer because of the pain in my hips and legs but I had a good time with a bike for years and years. It took me to see old boyfriends, it took me to the creek to eat peanut butter and banana sandwiches with my good friend, and it helped me chase boys. I have just had a great time with a bike. Those were FUN days!! Days that I will never forget...as long as this ole' brain holds up for me that is!!

FLIP FLOP FLOOZIE SMILING ONCE AGAIN!!

(aren't memories wonderful...good ones that is?)

I remember learning to ride my bike too! My dad held on to the back and ran along beside me and let go....I fell over. But he did it again (I think several times) and I finally got it. Thanks for sharing your sweet memory and reminding me of mine.

Look at you Miss Thing. Nice picture and memory. Lets hear it for training wheels or I would have never survived. I'm back!

Oh what a good picture I remember that as if it were yesterday. Dad said to tell you that your Mother was 24, oh my goodness, and now I am 82, can you believe that one? Thanks for including me in your Mondy memories, this is how I get some of my old pictures back from you, as I put them in my picture file and then I can go look at them once again. I love this one so much, thank you honey and may all your childhood memories be good one. Love Mother

What a FABULOUS memory! And that IS a mighty BIG bike for a 5 year old! My kids bikes were much smaller than that when they learned how to ride! (i think my OWN was smaller too!) I do remember my first bike being turquoise and white -- but I don't actually "remember" learning to ride it -- though I do know that it was my Dad that helped me, by holding on to the seat and running along beside me on our front sidewalk. LOL! Maybe that IS a memory! But I don't remember it actually happening ... I just remember that it did happen... isn't that odd? Hm. I have mixed feelings on them. I think NOT having them might be better. I think kids become very dependent on them and don't learn to ride as quickly....

Oh do tell! I also remember learning a two wheeler! My father won my bike for me!! It was blue metallic and oh so big.......and shiny!! With big fat tires (like the mountain bikes of today's times)

I learned on a sidewalk, living in the city of course, but oh what a feeling to know you're finally out on your own.

My dad taught me.

Great story Flip Flop!! I love these days going down memory lane. Of course at my blog a lot are not always done on Monday. But, this is an especially good day to go a'blog-hoppin'!!!

What a sweet memory! I loved riding my bike too. I went for bike rides with my grandfather all the time when I was younger. We had all kinds of neat adventures!
When I got older, I would then ride my bike alot further, like miles and miles to visit my aunt, this was in Chicago and before I had my drivers license. It was fun though! Great memories!

What a wonderful memory, Sandy. And what I loved best was that your mom responded to it. You are so fortunate to still have her. Cherish her! and I know you do.

Dear Flip Flop...I have been thinking of this posting all week.

Who can EVER forget the first time we learned to ride a bike!

With so many children in our family, bikes were few and far between but when we DID finally have one that we all had to share it sure was fun!

It took me several weeks before I could handle one and lots of pain...Ha!!

I have enjoyed reading this so much!
It reminded me of the old roller skates too that we had to share!
The kind that had four wheels and a key!

I am afraid that the children nowadays don't have a fraction of the fun that we used to have even though we DID have to walk three miles in a blizzard to get to school...Ha!!....Love Terry
