Monday Memories

Yeap, I was an angel ONCE!! Long time ago now!! I did everything to get to stay at home when the kids were young!!

I took up sewing...Oh my what a thing that was..BAD idea!! I made it through it okay. I did typing at home. I had to take my work back everyday and then get more. That was on a typewriter too!! Becky was little and required a lot of time but so did the typing!! That did not last long because I could not keep up with all the work they sent to me and taking care of my daughter.

Then I did macrame'!! That was really popular in the 70's and 80's. I learned how to make half of one of those owls. Hubby took the pattern to work to copy it for me and came home with orders for me!! That is how it started!! I sold TONS of cords made into almost anything and everything. I remember making 70 owls...every color too!! I finally just sat in this one chair and worked and worked. I made one of those BIG hanging tables!! What a feat that was!! If it ever comes back I am on it!! I had parties and I even taught others at my home to do it. What a run that was!! It stopped just like it started!!

I worked at several banks over the years!! Not long at most of them because I needed to be home with the kids. At one of the banks hubby was working nights and i was working days. I got home one day and our daughter, Julie had been eating cat food..hubby had fallen asleep!! I thought what else would she get into. I tried getting sitters and never earned enough salary to keep that up either.

I did baby sitting!! I am so proud of my daughter Julie. She has been doing this for tons of years now and i only lasted about 5 years. I just could not do it any longer!!

During the 80's I cleaned house for others!! I had a good business going there but after awhile your back and everything just wears out!! I lasted for 7 years at that hard job!!

Finally the kids got older and moved out!! I got a few jobs then and got very stuck at State Farm in Illinois. We had the opportunity to move here to Savannah!! I knew that the stressful job that I had been at would be out of my life and mind!!

I retired there in March of 01 and hubby said that by April I was a new person. He said the OLD SANDY was back. I guess I don't handle stress very well..SMILE!!

Well that is just a look back on my business career!! Ha!! Mostly a mother at heart though!!

In other news!! No news really..just the same ole' stuff!! I do get my hair colored tomorrow!! Should look some better...about all that I can do for myself any more...old shucks!!

Hi Sandy,
You've certainly earned retirement. You've done so many different jobs.
I agree that my favorite "job" was to be a stay at home Mom, and I was blessed to be able to do just that all through my children's elementary school years.
Have a great week.

You really HAVE had some interesting jobs! I ADMIRE you doing house cleaning for sure! I don't even like to clean MY OWN! I can't imagine going out and doing it for other people! Unh-unh! NOT this girl! I'd rather go back to being a sheet metal worker! LOL! I did the day care thing too -- I did it when Amanda was little -- until she was 3. And then again when my young ones were little - until they started school. Then I went to school with 'em! I guess we've both had pretty diverse "career choices" -- and I too only EVER wanted to be a mother! Just let me do that - and NOTHING else! LOL! It's a shame you can't survive like THAT!

macrame! I am the queen! In 1983 I made a macrame rope that went around a 1956 Ford F-100 at a car show.. It belonged to my boy friend at the time and I did a yellow and red rope (His truck was RED) and it was 6 strands and hooked at the top of four posts... It was very impressive! The car show was in Tulsa Oklahoma and he won first place on his truck and I got honorable mention on my rope! Hahahahha what a deal....... I too made many of those BIG tables, not no owls! Thanks for the memories.......

You have had several jobs haven't you, Sandy? I remember typing on those old typewriters. Typing on a computer keyboard is so much easier.

I took up sewing once, too, but I didn't like it. I made several things and finally gave up on it. It made me nervous.

Hope your week is off to a good start, Sandy.

What a lovely angel you were. I love the wings and the halo.

I'm not familiar with the macrame but it sounds interesting.

I admire how hard you worked for your family.

Oh Sandy....LOVE the photo you shared with us. That is a great one. I love these kinds of entries, filled with such fond memories of days past.

And yes, I know what you mean about stress on the job and life in general sometimes. I would not go back to a working environment if I can help it. Life is just way to short to not enjoy it in the 'autumn years of our lives'.

Great post.

Awww....you still are an angel and I agree Motherhood, and grandma duty suits you perfectly. Just got back the family portraits (taken while Becky, Emma, and Jerry were here). Stop by and take a peek.

I think it's great the way you found ways to make money so you could be at home with the kids. I'm sure it made a great difference in their lives. I was thankful that I didn't need to work when my kids were growing up. I think it's neat that you were an angel once. I think maybe you still are.

Hi Sandy, while Emma is taking a nap right now, I will visit around on my computer..So far so good with how she is doing after surgery .

I could never clean other people's houses..I would sweep stuff under a bed and call it clean...

I don't know how long I will stay in Atlanta, but I am never ready to leave..Talk later.

Soooooooooo sorry you have had such trouble with your legs and back. Yes on does get a bit weary when no one can find the reason..... I am done for a while with the test and stuff.. I have purchased a Total Gym and have started stretching..... Walking and going to loose another 40 lbs.. then we will see... I pray that God would heal whatever is wrong with those legs and back and you would live pain free....

Hugs girl friend...

You have worked hard and now it's time to kick back and enjoy! I agree... being a mom is the best!

I hope you get a few days of this cooler weather with low humidity. Just perfect for the south!

I still struggle with the thought of juggling working outside the home and taking care of Mary. Everyone always told me when the kids get older it's easier to go back to work, they don't need so much attention, but I think they need more attention when they get older and then in their teens!
Great post! Thanks for sharing your adventures with us!

I don't think anyone does well with stress. I remember the macrame days! I was busy crocheting doilies..the thing I remember most was not having very much contact with any friends...well I had a set of twins and a 5 year old that kept me busy and I didn't drive back then hardly at all. I love them to pieces but am glad for today..smile.
